Cooperative Education
This opportunity is available to Career Center students who are at least 16 years of age.

This flexible, individualized program provides a link between school and work. Students are placed with area employers and businesses where they receive “on the job” training, related to their Career Center Program. Work experiences are individually tailored to each students career goals, the demands of his or her program, and community opportunities. In addition, students may earn wages, and receive school credit. Eligibility for this program is based upon instructor recommendations, academic achievement, excellent attendance, mature behavior and a demonstrated work ethic. Students are supported and supervised by a Co-Op coordinator. Work experiences can take place during or after school hours, and occur throughout the school year. All career center students also receive workplace readiness training in the classroom.

There are three types of experiences that students can participate in:

  1. Career Work Experience (CWE) This involves short term unpaid career exploration in a field related to a students program or interest. Students spend up to 30 hours at a work site, and rotate through related job areas observing and participating.
  2. Cooperative Technical Education (CTE) Students are employed in area businesses in part-time jobs related to their career interest. The student reports to the job, is paid as a regular employee and earns school credit. The employer evaluates the students on a regular basis, and students receive training that only a work site can provide.
  3. Student Apprenticeship In this program, students enter into either a 1 or 2-year relationship with an employer. This employer-school partnership integrates academic instruction, structured job training, and paid work site experience. Students follow an employer-driven curriculum that reflects the competencies and demands of the work site. Upon completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion from the VT Department of Education.
