Building Trades
Year 1: 12 Credits

First year students are exposed to proper safety techniques, safe use of power and hand tools, identification and use of building materials, print reading, construction related math, and proper construction procedures. These include the framing of floors and walls, planning and construction of stairs, calculation and construction of roofs, installation of doors and windows, installation of various insulation products, interior wall coverings, taping and painting, and all exterior and interior finish work. Exterior finish work teaches students how to apply siding, exterior trim, and how to plan and build decks. Interior finish work includes applying trim to doors and windows, applying moldings, hanging interior doors and cabinetry as well as installing hardware. Students, after proper class preparation, will actually construct a house and apply learned procedures. Students are also exposed to team building and will hone problem-solving and employability skills. While building trade students are oriented primarily toward the carpentry field, they also will have limited exposure to concrete foundations, electrical, plumbing, and commercial construction techniques.

Year 2: 12 credits
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Building Trades I

Second year students review safety procedures and learn more new and varied construction techniques. Second year students are also given more of a leadership role and are expected to perform tasks with less guidance.

Long term projects: Construction of a single family dwelling both years.

Embedded Credit: Program Completer shall receive embedded academic math credits that can be used to satisfy graduation requirements.

Industrial Recognized Credentials: AGC of Vermont credential, VT OSHA 10 hour credential

Careers in your future: carpenter, plumber, mill wright, civil engineer, roofer, general construction, drafting, electrician, surveying, HVAC technician (most will require some post high school instruction)
